If you have whole FORUMS dedicated to people who have problems with your product, THAT SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING.
Dammit, no one look at the StrawberryWine fic archive til I sort this shit out >:/

Date: 2008-09-05 04:26 pm (UTC)It's mostly for that -- archiving and having a database people can search, which is nice...WHEN IT'S NOT BEING AN ASSHAT.

Date: 2008-09-05 04:34 pm (UTC)And your masterlist may be great for you and your fandom, but unless it contains every fic--good AND bad, because that's subjective :P--an archive's better for most people ^_~
LJ's nice for the communal atmosphere and all, and a good place to archive your personal faves (provided they're all on LJ of course), but not so good for a full archive of a series' fics. It takes some maaaaad dedication to keep a big comm organized on LJ, and considerably less so on archives, in my experience.
I like LJ for organizing and finding all my own faves, and the new fics in my fandoms, but for the one that I run an archive for, it's nice to have them all together and easily searchable in one place, especially since some of the authors there have never heard of LJ :)

Date: 2008-09-05 04:48 pm (UTC)Like I said -- maybe a masterlist works for you, plus those are your personal choices. But it's multiple fandoms (mine's a single-fandom archive), you can't sort, you can't read any one pairing unless you do a Find.
Unless they knew and trusted that person's judgement of fic ahead of time, I don't think many people would consult someone else's list of fics before heading to an archive full of all kinds of search and sorting features given the two choices.

Date: 2008-09-05 04:51 pm (UTC)a. write VERY few pairing fics--I'm almost 95% G-rated, and most have no pairing in mind
b. tag using a pretty good tag system that's understandable at a glance
c. am too lazy to set up a proper archive that allows me to do what you say efiction can. XD Which may be the biggest reason. You get yours up and running and I'll go poke at it to see if I like the thing. ^_^

Date: 2008-09-05 04:56 pm (UTC)Myu/*pnish* fandom has a huge cast, and so it's really well-fitted to an archive style, hence why I started it.
And this post is now kinda moot, cause I finished reupping the old files and everything is back to normal <3333 (well, as normal as it was before -- it's been up for something like a year or more, and has 100 or so authors I think, most of whom are just crossposting from LJ for posterity's sake).
You're welcome to check it out here (http://www.strawberrywine.org/efiction/index.php) (ignoring the off-kilter code in places where I haven't had time to properly tweak the CSS and make it pretty XD;;;) if you like, but I warn ya: 90% of the stuff on there is RPS, so you might want to stay away since it's not your cuppa tea :P
If you know the archive JumpyBoys for Jump manga series, they use (used?) eFiction :) That's how I found it originally.

Date: 2008-09-05 11:02 pm (UTC)I really like the little icons to help catch your eye for new updates and whatnot, very cute :D
I have to agree with Court though, something like that (which clearly takes massive amounts of work, wow) is awesome, but I'd chose the ease of efiction's archiving system over the pain of html coding. Plus, I agree with the points that Court mentioned regarding how easy it is to search for fics based on various criteria. With a list like that it requires the viewer (especially the new and unindoctrinated) to spend a lot more time reading every line of info when perhaps they're only searching for a particular pairing or genre or rating. A searchable database is probably always going to be easier for that purpose simply by the nature of the thing *nods*
With that said though, I'm still going to spend awhile going through your list and find some good stuff to read XD

Date: 2008-09-06 12:00 am (UTC)I suspect that my fics won't appeal to anyone searching for specific pairings. I almost never write pairing-fic, I prefer not to be searchable by genre (but I do have a "special: crossover" and "special: crossover au" tag), and almost everything is rated G. That said, I should highlight the "recommended" fics a little more for people who are new to my work.
Thanks for your comment--it helps me understand the view of the readers I'm not reaching! ^_^
