...Well that's the point of an archive :P With efiction you can search by character, pairing, genre, author, rating, whether it's a multi-chapter, one shot, challenge-fic, collaboration, etc :P
And your masterlist may be great for you and your fandom, but unless it contains every fic--good AND bad, because that's subjective :P--an archive's better for most people ^_~
LJ's nice for the communal atmosphere and all, and a good place to archive your personal faves (provided they're all on LJ of course), but not so good for a full archive of a series' fics. It takes some maaaaad dedication to keep a big comm organized on LJ, and considerably less so on archives, in my experience.
I like LJ for organizing and finding all my own faves, and the new fics in my fandoms, but for the one that I run an archive for, it's nice to have them all together and easily searchable in one place, especially since some of the authors there have never heard of LJ :)
