LJ's great for new stuff, but if I'm a newbie in a fandom, I'd prefer a fic archive that's easy to browse and search for my particular pairing and such over someone's unorganized memories any day :D
It's mostly for that -- archiving and having a database people can search, which is nice...WHEN IT'S NOT BEING AN ASSHAT.
