私の夏休みをカエセェッッッ!

...Well there goes MY fun summer.
Apparently because I'm not ROLLING in dough from translating (i.e. not making $200 a week, a salary I wasn't even earning back at LSU when I was CURING CANCER) this means I have to go out and get a real job. They recommended a nice number of retail outlets and fast food chains--jobs I'd, I'm sorry, SOONER SLIT MY WRISTS THAN WORK AT IF I CAN HELP IT THANKS ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ Nevermind, though, that I COULD CARE LESS HOW MUCH MONEY I'M MAKING TRANSLATING. My purpose this summer was to translate and use the money from that to put forward to rent, which I'd have a nice little nest egg by August.
Then my mom and dad and I had one of our annual chats last night about how I need better work ethic, and translating isn't bringing in the money I need right now. And then my dad pulled the dirtiest card of all and told me he wants me to be able to afford to go to Japan whenever I want and wouldn't it be nice to have the money to do that???
...Okay, let me say this. I whine about wanting to go to Japan, BUT I'M NOT THAT DESPERATE THANKS. Guys--if I get that desperate? So desperate to go that I work in retail? PERMISSION TO HUNT ME DOWN AND SHOOT ME IS YOURS *headdesk* Tuti is SO not worth putting up with OTHER PEOPLE for 8 hours straight 5 days a week for months on end *shudder* I'm not a people person at all, and would likely be fired within a few days XD
I did find out, though, that apparently the Multicultural Center of the South is located, like, 15 minutes from my house, downtown o___o And what's more, the ONLY person they have working in their offices down there for any special culture? A 'Miki Tanaka' from Oita, Japan.
...WTF THANKS FOR TELLING ME, SHREVEPORT. I sent her an email in some vain hope that I might be able to file papers or something down there and just bask in her general native Japanese presence as pay or some such XD ♥
I also put up a resume on monster.com and shreveporthelpwanted.com, but...come on, I'm a college student with no degree, looking for summer work, there's not going to be much available beyond lovely retail. My best bet was sending an email off to some people looking for a church secretary (20 hours a week? Yes please!), since they only asked that the applicant be familiar with Excel. I'm thinking they'll want someone permanent, but who knows, I might get lucky.
*sigh* Maybe I'll go see if Barnes and Noble is hiring...
HAVE I MENTIONED HOW MUCH I DON'T WANT TO WORK RETAIL?? ♥

I feel your pain, though. Retail is absolutely NASTY. Reception work sounds so much better (I bet KY will totally kill that notion, though. XD) Does your college have a careers website?

Date: 2006-05-31 06:08 am (UTC)Retail blows, food is worse though.
I have something to show you next time you're on Yahoo. Well, a couple things. :P Both of them mindblowingly awesome. :P

Date: 2006-05-31 06:14 am (UTC)But yes, if you still have free time (ie. you're pullin' 20 hours a week), then go for a more fun, low-paying job and suppliment your income with translating. After all, we KNOW you're good, and you can still make good money with it.
And WTF Mr.C, that was a low trick. Hell, I'D like to go to Japan whenever I like, and I'm sure that other people would too. But honestly, to be pullin' in $200 a week would require at least $6.50 in pay and a nice 40-hour workweek ($260 minus all the taxes). He wasn't expecting that in the first place, was he? It's unrealistic at best.
This week, try to exhause all your options outside of retail. But within the next week or two, if there are no significant leads, you'll have to apply to at least ONE store to appease the parentals.
Two weeks. In just two weeks, I'll have my first paycheck, and I can help ya out, if ya need it. ♥no subject

What about an office job? Are there any temp agencies nearby? Office work is far preferable to retail. @__@ But then, being ripped apart by wild dogs is far preferable to retail.
If you actually do end up working in retail, however, I will change my tune very rapidly and extoll its few virtues so it won't seem so bad. :P

Date: 2006-05-31 12:07 pm (UTC)Of course, jobs will last anywhere from a couple days to a month, which I think is a really good thing for a summer job, anyway - they'll call you and ask you if you'd be interested in X position for X days, and you'll agree/disagree, and then when that's done, they'll call you in a couple days for the next assignment. My first two months of temping, I worked two different assignments - one three days full time at $10 an hour and one for two weeks, 10-2, for $11.50 an hour - and made about $1000. (That's almost the cost of a plane ticket to Japan! *_*)
Anyway, if you don't fancy office work, why not try to find a position somewhere that rents or sells anime? It'll be retail, but at least it'll be something you're interested/knowledgable in. ^_^
Sorry for the overlong spiel :P but I was in your shoes about a year and a half ago. Good luck! And whatever you do, I hope you find something that allows you go go to Japan whenever you want. ~*~kirakira~*~ :D

Date: 2006-05-31 12:49 pm (UTC)like mej/k. Actually, probably not. Comic stores in general have cool people, at least the one I went to before. As for retail: yeah, it stinks. Look at me, I've been there for seven years. It's helped me become a better people person (then again, so has going to church again). I'll be done by the end of next year, I hope.
But for a summer job, it's decent. You can go and work part time, say 20-25 hours a week (so you can still have time for your translating), make whatever set minimum wage they have there, and save up for your trip. :)
Just my input. You know I had to. XD
