fencer_xThere comes a time in every young JET hopeful's life where she must confront a sad reality: Japanese men are sometimes too freaking cute to bear.
We met up pretty much on time this week (yay!), and I was all abubble, ready for some fun Japanese-meeting-stuff to go on, so I started off making sure he was actually IN the Japan club.
Oops. Turns out he's not. He mentioned he thought there was a bunkasai (Cultural Day in Japan, I believe it was the 3rd) celebration going on in the MSC today, but he didn't know where, and didn't really have any interet in going. Okay...*quickly steers the conversation away* He went on to say he didn't really like the people in the Japan club, and whenI prodded why, he mentioned that he really liked the Japanese attitude of a hundred years ago, but nowadays they're just too...I guess 'timid' is the effect he was going for. They won't state their opinions clearly, won't be upfront about their feelings. "'Omae ga jibun de kimero!' tte yoku iitai," he says ("I just want to say, 'Make your own decisions!'" <--except what he wanted to say to them was a LOT rougher and ruder in tone, showing how much he doesn't like their nature).
This kinda surprised me, I didn't know his frustration with his own people extended outside the preppy high-school girls, and not having been around any Japanese people beyond him, I couldn't really fully get what he was saying, because my exposure's been, of course, with anime and manga and the like--certainly not the normal way Japanese people act. I'm really curious if he's always felt this way, or if it's some product of his being over here for so long (how long? Dunno). He still certainly retains many traits I consider very 'Japanese,' like his obsession with being on time, but all in all, that's not a bad trait to have, you know--he SHOULD be kinda disturbed when people blow him off, any normal person would.
We quickly kinda moved past that topic though, and I didn't bring it up again (though *pouts* I DID want to be taken around, I was hoping to try some food or something, since I know I'd be way too shy to do it just myself), so we went on to other random topics. First (and wtf, I guess I don't usually wear makeup?) he pointed out that I was wearing makeup today, and I looked very pretty XDDDD Then bird flu of all topics came up, and he started talking about how a lot of research money was coming into the university of late, and he suspected it was because "Papa Bush" lived close by. XD I kinda laughed at his calling Bush Sr. "Papa Bush" cause it was just funny to see him use such a colloquial phrase, and he asked if many American caled hm that, and I said that I called him "Bush Sr." and that 'Papa' was kind of a kids' word, which he laughed at, seeing as the Japanese have taken it too, without even taking into account WHO uses it.
There was a lull in the convo and we switched topics, and he asked me if I'd ever gone to a football game here. I said I had (with the parents, of course, I've got ZERO spirit), and then he kinda got quiet and started looking around like he was about to do something bad. He then made a sign with his hands--think of making a gun sign with both hands, with your hands palm together, pointer fingers sticking outwards, and other fingers wrapping around, like you're shooting something. When he did this, my first thought was, "Oh, the 'Whoop!' sign!" For the non-A&Mers, "Whoop!" is just a word upperclassmen are allowed to say (lowerclassmen who say it get made to do pushups >D), and when you say it, you're supposed to make the hand sign. It's done all the time at games, just a tradition, you know?
Anyways, he'd mentioned football games, so that was my first thought--that he was making the whoop sign. Turns out, when he'd first seen someone do that, HIS first thought had been: KANCHO
Now, let me take pity on (or be happy for?) the people who don't know what a kancho is. It's a trick kids love to pull on adults (many times elementary school students on teachers) where they sneak around behind them, put their hands together like in a gun motion, and then POKE THE TEACHER IN THE BUTT. Please imagine such a thing happening to you, and just TRY and tell me you wouldn't be scarred for life.
The MINUTE he started miming what a kancho was, thinking I didn't know, I kind of laughed nervously and said, "...Kancho?" and his eyes went wide, like, "WTF HOW DOES SHE KNOW WHAT A KANCHO IS?!" >_< I can't believe that...
How horrified he was of it is difficult to describe in text, but I nearly hurt myself laughing, seeing this horrified look cross his face. I can totally imagine it--him sitting in front of a TV and seeing the Yell Leaders (kinda like male cheerleaders) come on the field and make that SIGN, and being Japanese, the first thing he thinks is, "Oh dear god they're going to kancho the fans--RUN!" Then he mentioned that some people in the 489 class want to be JET teachers, and he's afraid for them XD Then he proceeded to demonstrate what their stay would be like by pretending that he was in a school classroom, bidding little children goodbye, and then getting kancho'd. Following that was a subsequent scene where he kept his hands over his butt and kinda nodded sweetly at the imaginary children--please to be noting this whole time I'm sitting in a chair a few feet away trying desperately not to fall on the floor in giggles.
After that died down, he of course asked about The Cows ♥ I tried to get through this topic quickly, but he felt the need to remind me that he really liked cows, and they were so calm and pretty, and PLEASE MAN. You don't have to endear yourself MORE to me!
Maa, it's almost time for class, but that's about all that happened this week! Oh well~ It was still a BARREL OF LAUGHS ♥
