Today was IKEBUKURO DAY!!

So, this morning we had boring seminars, and then around 2:30 the roomie and I ducked out into the crowded Tokyo streets in search of the nearest Tully's (yes, the very same one Tuti touts :D). There was actually one in the next building over, so we went in and had sandwiches, mmm. Could have done without EVERY OTHER CUSTOMER SMOKING, but meh :/ what can ya do?

At 4 I ran to Shinjuku station again and met up with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] kudasaru who promised to take me down the famed Otome Road. We hopped the Yamanote line and got off at Ikebukuro and the first thing that greeted me was a lovely Animate *________*

So yes, we went into 5 or 6 stores, and she managed to buy way more than I did XD Perhaps that's because all the stuff *I* wanted was way too expensive for me to shell out right now 8D As it was I bought 2 doujinshi, both of which I intend to sell (soooo if anyone is interested in the K2 OoKiku anthology or Ruru's anthology, let me know :D Flist gets first dibs!).

What struck me, though, going into all these K-Books and Animate stores and Mandarake was that WOW. TENIMYU AND BURIMYU ARE REALLY. REALLY. POPULAR.

Every store was playing either DVDs on TV screens or blasting TeniMyu/BuriMyu over the speakers, walls of bromides and pamphlets, DVD box sets, CDs, autographed signboards, it was amazing! I had no IDEA these guys were that popular! There was even a BuriMyu SECTION of doujinshi in Mandarake and K-Books *_____________* It was considerably smaller than the TeniMyu one, granted, but it was there!

And I found, I must admit, the WEIRDEST doujinshi I've ever seen. And actually, I think it was just a novel, but still.

THERE IS NO REASON THERE SHOULD BE YUZAWA KOUICHIROU/TSUCHIYA YUUICHI SMUT IN EXISTENCE OUTSIDE OF MINE AND KY'S HEADS.

I shit you not it was THERE. The cover was Tuti tied up, dressed in a sailor girl's uniform >_> WTF. We JOKED about Yuzawa sexing up Tuti from their days in BQMAP together. IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO SIGNAL TO SOME PSYCHIC FANGIRL IN JAPAN TO WRITE IT.

At a crepe on the way back to Ikebukuro station--Chocolate Almond Custard *drools* SO GOOD *_____*

And then we stopped at a vending machine to get liquid refreshment, and there were these two older Japanese guys taking a break beside them. We politely ignored them, til one of them got up and leaned over to talk to us.........what.

He had pretty good English, really, I was impressed. And asked innocent enough questions--what were we doing in Japan, how did we like Tokyo, etc. He told us he hoped we had a good time, and we left him. Wow. XD Most people are scared out of their wits to talk to us, so to be approached like that just because someone wanted to practice their English was... XD kinda gave me a little thrill~

8DDDDDD Lookit how close it isssss...

Going to Gain at 3, WISH ME LUCK SPEAKING WITH YAMASHITA-TENCHOOOUUUU. He's about to get the shock of his life >) Yes, I will be wearing my *pnish* shirt and toting Decossam. SOCKS, HERE I COME.

I'm thinking of eating at Tuti's favorite curry restaurant tomorrow night, y/n? 8DDDDD

I was quite amused going to breakfast this morning at the old Japanese ladies who got on and told us (and everyone who got on afterwards) ohayou gozaimasu XDDDDD

....good god, amazing, everything I hoped it would be. Huge buildings amazing skylines, traffic XD;;; everything a good visit to a big city SHOULD be. I really wish we had more time to explore, but alas. Anyways, so far today (i.e. the past 24 hours) I've:

--spoken Japanese with two high school teachers from Hikone
--spoken Japanese to a Chinese girl at Starbucks in Detroit during the layover, thoroughly embarrassed myself
--nearly wet myself with the Johnny's-level pretty thing that checked my passport at customs in Narita
--asked for directions for the first time in Japanese (with no recourse to English, I mean)
--was fanboyed in Japanese by a 40+ year-old doorman (after I asked him the directions)
--ordered in Japanese (McDonald's, and yes I DID ask for a "potato no L" ala Burger Shop--fun fact, while Japanese DRINK sizes are smaller, their fry portions are not! Or at least, the large here is the same as in America o____o plus, their Coke is made with real sugar, so it tastes different *___*)
--flown through Michigan, Canada, Alaska, and some Russian airspace

SO tired (been up since 4 after 4 hours of sleep, slept very little on the plane over here, and now it's, for my body, 8 AM _o_ Jet lag you are no friend of mine.

Over the next few days I'll be wandering the hotel from seminar to seminar in the day and stalking Gain and Shinjuku-eki (minami-guchi, of course!) at night~ WISH ME LUCK!!
fencer_x: (Oh Tuti!)
Seriously, I think he's worn it, like, 2/3 of the past two weeks. It's starting to creep me out--he's like one of those cartoon characters who wears the same thing every day o_O

I had a dream last night that I was not only assigned to Tokyo for JET, I was going to be the boy-emperor's personal tutor. If that doesn't sound like a hit shoujo anime waiting to be born, I dunno what does. This was perhaps brought on by my mounting excitement XD I got more info from my prefecture yesterday.

Cut for pics )

In other good news, my predecessor finally got in touch with me, YAYZ. I can finally ask someone all this stuff I've been wanting to know about. Found out there's a whole website with forums for Shiga-ken-bound JETs, shigajet.org, which will prove quite lovely I think. Some things were brought up which I hadn't thought of yet, and he pretty much mapped out exactly what I'll be doing from the moment I step off the plane (even inside the airport) to when I get to my apartment.

I'm gonna have to sit down and think of all the stuff I wanna know because I don't wanna bug him TOO much, but I definitely have my work cut out for me now getting ready for all this @__@

Sometime within the next few days I'm gonna hit up some stores and get gads of stickers and stamps, I think, as this is a must-have apparently. Also need to look into making a scrapbook, oi...

I think my favorite discovery was this, though: Exiting the Shinkensen at Maibara station you will change to a local train and head south to Otsu (the capital of Shiga). Upon arriving at Otsu you will need to walk with your luggage to a council office. This takes about 15 minutes. After you arrive you will have a few minutes to grab a drink and get change into your suit. Then you will meet your supervisor and then rattle off a short self-introduction in Japanese in front of everyone.

...

Oh people, you know how I am at introductions. I LOVE THEM <--if you believe this, off the flist right now. BOY I CAN'T WAIT TO DO THIS. XDDDDD

So I'm sitting here in the Blocker computer lab with 20 more minutes to kill until class, and feeling pretty good.

I set up my JET interview time the other day (haven't had it 100% confirmed, but I'm going to assume for right now this is it)--February 14th @ 3:20 PM. That's smack dab in the middle of my Wednesday, so I don't have to get up SUPER early, and still have time to take my time getting there, make sure I park correctly and find the right room (from what Johnson-sensei explained, it's a little weird navigating the embassy XD;;;;). I'm getting more and more excited as the days go by--February is turning out pretty nice~~

3 more days til Nacchi arrives, and then we get one month of Frenchie :D The weekend of the 10th I'm planning on hauling her up to Shreveport to take her out to an authentic Louisiana Mardi Gras parade ♥ She will get beaded and cupped and medallion'd and she will LOVE IT. My parents are also excited to meet her XD She'll probably be the most international person they've ever met :D

Speaking of people excited to meet our nacchikins, Conversation Table, next Tuesday @ 7:30 at Coffee Station! Yesterday's was tons of fun, too XD KY already talked about it, but I think the highlight of the evening was our, "Shizuka-chan!" exchange XDDDD I think it just says something about how pervasive that show is in Japanese culture that all I had to do was whisper that name and every Japanese person at the table perked up and started going on about, "Doraemon?? Sore, Doraemon no koto??"

Only slightly less funny was Johnson-sensei imitating the American guards at the Embassy in Houston who try their level best to speak Japanese. "SOO-ME-MAH-SIN!"

So Nacchi here on the 3rd, Mardi Gras the next weekend, Jamie and Kai-chan the NEXT weekend, the week after that Brandy's coming down, and somehow during all that I have to find a way to, you know, go to work, go to school, study for tests, tutor, do SIs, ask Shuuhei to marry me, buy a new outfit for the interview, NOT FAIL MY LAST SEMESTER.

It's gonna be a busy month.

There comes a time in every young JET hopeful's life where she must confront a sad reality: Japanese men are sometimes too freaking cute to bear.
