Ugh. OK people, now, I love Ryoma, he's a snarky brat and that does something for me. It really does, I love seeing snarky underdogs stick it to the baddies who underestimate them.
But.
But, come on...do we really need to see him kicking Atobe's ass? I want his ass nicely preserved, without Ryoma stepping all over it. I don't want to see him be forced by this stupid bet to SHAVE HIS HEAD BALD. I like Atobe's hair.
It must be said here, then. Now. There are people in this series whom I never want/wanted to see Ryoma beat: Atobe. Tezuka. Nanjiroh. I could go on. Ryoma's the main character, I get it, but he shouldn't be invincible. He's a human, despite how DBZ-esque all these boys' tennis moves may seem at times, let's keep it as believeable as possible, ne? Let. The boy. Lose some.
Me? I hope he gets too cocky, personally. I hope he underestimates Atobe just once, just so he'll get pulled back down to earth, because when was the last time he lost? I mean, really lost, in an official game, in front of his peers and people he cares about? When was the last time he was shown that there are still people--and always will be people--who are better than him, even if it's only because he's the one doing the underestimating this time?
I'll admit, Atobe vs. Ryoma has the makings of a GREAT match. Atobe beat Tezuka, kinda sorta, and Tezuka hung Ryoma out to dry, but Ryoma's since become much better, so who knows how it's going to end up. BUT. Just because it has the makings of a great match doesn't mean I want to see it. See, I'm the type to dread matches like this, because I don't want either character to lose, really. Or in this case, don't want Atobe to lose and don't believe Ryoma will, but same ends.
I just...my respect for Konomi is waning. Quickly. He's selling himself out for easy matches or what he thinks the fans want--Atobe vs Ryoma, a match you won't want to miss, right? WRONG. I dread the outcome. I really do. Because it's Konomi and his main character, in all likelihood, will not lose this match.
Granted, he SHOULD give the majority of fans what that majority wants, and I'm sure a majority of fans are probably wetting their pants right now in anticipation, but...just...like I said in a previous post, this series has become really, really special to me, and I hate to see it just...SUCK SO MUCH now. I mean, what the HELL was that last chapter? After working all that time, coming so far, going into that WTFOMGWEARESOINSYNCH mode, the flashbacks, the laughter and tearful memories, all that...ONLY TO HAVE THE GOLDEN PAIR LOSE?
Konomi-sensei, sit down. Sit down, take a deep breath, and go back and read your series. Because obviously you've forgotten what some of these characters' roles are. You've forgotten that Golden Pair is THE GOLDEN PAIR, the doubles combo you've pimped since day 1 (book 1?)--the greeeaaat and poooowweeeerful doubles pair, the National level team that can outsynch, out-think, amd outplay most any other team.
Oishi hurt his wrist. But he just sprained it, that's it. And it happened many, many matches ago. He's played spectacularly since then (or at least, it hasn't bothered him enough to result in GP losing a set for that reason), so what's with this sudden flaring up of the injury again? Did I miss something? Oishi's wrist hasn't been a problem since, like, FOREVER. So what's with it suddenly popping up at the forefront? Eiji's never stopped Oishi from pushing himself to win a game (AT MATCH-FRICKING-POINT) before because of his wrist--WHY NOW?
Oh, that's right. Back to the problem at hand: ATOBE VS. RYOMA. Golden Pair had to lose for NO GOOD REASON (come on, Silver Pair's good...but they were so having their asses handed to them by the Golden Pair) other than to make this match possible. That ought to be their slogan or something. "This match brought to you by: THE BEST CONBI EVER LOSING FOR NO SDIFUHSOFUSDIF REASON." I did not want to see this match that badly. Certainly not so bad that I'd put GP who DESERVED and had EARNED this win in the position where they pretty much have to start over.
This post will now segue into a discussion onBridgetWhy The Golden Pair Should Have Cleaned ToriShishi's Clock.
When was the last time they won? Do you know how sad it is that I can't even remember? As I type this, I'm asking every PoT addict on my buddy list I can find this question, because I honestly don't remember. They lost to Rikkaidai, lost to St. Rudolph, won against Fudoumine...ok, I just had to go back and watch episodes to recall that they won against the Jimmies of Yamabuki (screw me, I didn't watch BukiMyu) and the Jyousei Shounan team (but that was animeverse, anyone know about their manga wins/losses?). Of these, JS and Rikkaidai were the only post-wrist-injury matches that the Golden Pair played. Oishi's wrist injury flared up near the end of the JS game, but they managed to pull through. All is good. Eiji lost his cool during the Rikkaidai match, and the resulting fight caused them to lose barely to Rikkaidai. A loss, but not wrist related, and there was nothing to indicate that hsi wrist was even bothering Oishi. At this point, I think it's safe to assume that Oishi's coping well with it.
SO WHY, KONOMI, WHY?! Yes. SPECTACULAR plot device, man. Injuries heal, you know. Momo's ankle was sprained in the beginning of the series, and have you used it to make him lose a match yet? NO. You've used it as a drive to make the boy WIN yes, so GOOD ON YOU. *sigh* Suffice to say, Tezuka's shoulder is an exception. Momo's ankle healed, so why shouldn't Oishi's wrist? They both played with it injured, but didn't really push themselves too much. I should think after this amount of time (what, a few months at least right? It was two months between Tezuka wiping the floor with Ryoma and the Hyoutei match) he'd be ready to go. In as good condition as he was ever going to be after that sprain.
And yet, Konomi, you chose to sink down, to shy away from giving this pair, this pair you've shown so beautifully as having worked so hard to get this far--Eiji overcoming his stamina problem, Oishi's wrist injury, match after match after match, their promises to one another that they'd get this far and win, that they wouldn't go home losing, that they were done losing, that this was their last year to play doubles at Seigaku, and damned if they weren't going to leave together, winners.
You showed us that they'd worked that hard, what this meant to them, and then you shot us down, let us down, when they were at the top of their game, when they'd completely overwhelmed Shishido and Ohtori, when they were so in tune with one another that everyone on the sidelines thought them possessed.
I'd like to remind everyone at this point that they lost--not because Silver Pair overpowered them, but because Eiji intentionally stopped Oishi from hitting that ball, whether unconsciously or not. Shishido was down on the ground for crying out loud, Ohtori was standing along, there was no way that if they'd hit that ball that Ohtori could have handled it alone, not in his position, not with Golden Pair playing in such a synchronized manner as they were. They OWNED that game, and yet, Konomi, you backed away, you gave us a pissy reason, and you deprived this pair of what was likely their last chance to take a win at Nationals.
They'd better play again. They'd better play again, and they'd better win. It's blatantly obvious from these early 290s chapters that they're THE doubles team now. Silver Pair was, I'm convinced, at this point, the only team that could hold a candle to them, and they were so obviously outclassed it's almost sad. They just don't have the connection, the bond, that Golden Pair does. Anyone could see that, whether you ship them or not. And it's this point that makes it hurt all the more that Konomi felt, for whatever reason, that the Golden Pair should lose, just to satisfy some fans.
I wonder when this series became more about marketing to the majority for Konomi than about being true to the characters. All right, I know, it's fiction, they're just characters, they don't have real feelings beyond what's written on that pageand in fanfics. It's Konomi's creation, he's entitled to do with it as he wishes, I suppose.
But when you bring us this far, get us this attached to these boys, show us how hard they've worked, how much they've struggled together to get to this point, and then fail them for some stupid reason like Atobe vs. Ryoma...do you honestly expect us to sit by and take this lying down?
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: This. Sucks.
But.

Date: 2005-12-16 09:08 pm (UTC)Still, I understand how you feel. I mean, hey, weren't we crushed in ep.18 of Ganky? And though you didn't watch it, in ep.25 of FMA? When something is near and dear to your heart, indeed, when something has had such an affect on you as PoT has, then it hurts to see the mangaka screw up. On some level, I begin to wonder if his editor had something to do with this (appeal more to the male fans than the female one is what I'm thinking). In that sense, I could forgive him, because the man does need to get published. But if he just did it because, hey, Ryoma vs. Atobe is COOL!!, then no. That's unforgivable.
You see, I'm drawn to things that are character-based. I don't need to see flashy fights or awesome graphics; I just need to see how people interact with each other. So, when you mess up that interaction, THEN I get mad. THEN I start to hate the mangaka. And it doesn't help that GP lost so miserably, especially when they hate been on top. Let them get CREAMED by SP. Let them be overpowered or something. A loss is more understandable that way, instead of some dumbass wrist problem.
So, though I'm not as into this fandom as you are, I still feel the pain. It's because GP got me started in this when I didn't even know any of the characters' names; GP is what keeps me grounded in this fandom. Therefore, they are closest to my heart, and when something happens to them...
Ah, Konomi-sensei has only one-shot at redeeming himself for me. GP HAS to win the Nationals. As far as I know, that's the promise Eiji made to Oishi, right? If he doesn't come through on that...Thusly, Ryoma has to win against Atobe, else GP won't have another chance to play. Doesn't seem fair though, that Ryoma should be on top so much. Atobe-hime had his place, he had an aura about him. Play it off well, Konomi-sensei, or you'll cause your fandom to fall apart...

Date: 2005-12-16 09:19 pm (UTC)EXACTLY. The tennis matches are just a way to express their relationships. Building trust, destroying trust, having fun, getting serious, putting aside differences and surging ahead, or just PLAYING. It's all there in the relationships, and it just happens to be shown through tennis. Cracky tennis at that, but still.
I gotta agree with you, this feels like Konomi's attempt (or someone on his team) to win back the male fans. Girls got their slashy slashy Tenimyu, boys get their long-awaited matches like this. Because face it, the boys don't love GP. They don't love ANY doubles, I'm willing to bet. Because the flash and fervor comes in singles. It comes in Ryoma, in Tezuka, in Atobe, in Sanada, it comes when ONE person is given the chance to shine and grind their opponent into dust--and it's these matches that I think most girls dislike. It feels kind of sexist, but I think it's true, i really do--I identify a lot with these characters, so I don't want to see any of them get humiliated like this. It's never been about winning or losing.
GP HAS to win the Nationals. As far as I know, that's the promise Eiji made to Oishi, right? If he doesn't come through on that...
GP has one, maybe two more chances to actually win a match and keep this promise, and I think if it happens, it would most likely occur in Doubles 1 of the last match. Just because Konomi's the type to do that. People are going to have to lose in the final match, because it's 'boring' if D2, D1, and S3 win and that's that, you know? But just...HE BETTER. He SO better.
What I like best about this show is that Ryoma's the main character, but he's not the ONLY character. If it had been all about him, about little tensai genius prodigy Echizen Ryoma kickassing his way through the circuits to win tournaments, I'd have quickly lost interest. It's that the TEAM competes, that you have Tezuka and Fuji and Oishi and Eiji and Taka and Kaidoh and Inui and Momo and yes, Echizen's there too. It's the rival schools, it's the random side characters, the families, the coaches, the schoolmates, they ALL make this--it's 'Prince of Tennis' but it's NOT just about Ryoma. I only wish Konomi would wake up to that fact -_-
So, though I'm not as into this fandom as you are
SUNDAY, WHORE! SUNDAY!

Date: 2005-12-16 09:50 pm (UTC)And since Ryoma's never been my favorite character, I never thought much of him anyway. I thought he was just a little too cocky, a little too good, and I kinda wanted him to get knocked down a bit. That's why I was happy when Tezuka beat him, just to show him that there's ALWAYS room for improvement. I mean, his Dad's better than him, Ryoga's better than him, there ARE people who are better than him. He has to keep striving.
That's why I was initially turned off by Ryoma. Since I like the characters, I wasn't happy with Ryoma's interaction with his teammates. TOO cocky, he was. Then again, I'm only at the beginning, but I enjoy watching the other characters more because they have MEANINGFUL interactions. They talk, they laugh, they play together. In the OVA they worked together to beat the other team. In the movie they used each other's strengths to outwit the bad guys. While each of them are good as individuals, they shine when they are together. So when you put one down to build up another (as Konomi put down GP for Ryoma), THAT hurts me. It TOTALLY goes agains the model that he's set. Yes, Ryoma is the PRINCE, but he can't forget who helped him get that far.
And what. I'm still here, though we were supposed to leave today. What'cha doin' Monday? Looks like we'll be pulling in late Saturday, and I don't know if Cat's up for driving on Sunday. >__>
P.S. I want your GP icon...or one like it...

Actually, if there are characters I don't want to see Ryoma winning are, as your said, Tezuka, Atobe and Nanjirou.

Date: 2005-12-24 02:59 am (UTC)I'm curious--why do you think they deserved to win? I mean, I've seen plenty of matches where one team/player deserved to win, and sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. If they have the skills to back up their desire, they usually win, and if not, then they lose, to build themselves up and try again.
But we saw here that Shishido/Ohtori pair just didn't have the skills Golden Pair had, so what made them 'deserve' to win more? In my opinion, Golden Pair 'deserved' to win, if anyone deserved this win--we saw their mutual hard work quite throughly in recent chapters, knew how long they'd been working towards this, and they were, quite frankly, the obvious better players in this instance. The match could have gone either way, and in the end it was Eiji 'stopping' the match that led to ToriShishi's win, not their own skills.
We haven't seen any background of ToriShishi working hard for this particular win lately, have we? I'll admit, I don't usually read the manga, so there might have been something I missed, but just by reading the last ten chapters or so, you can see numerous instances of Oishi and Eiji working hard, polishing their skills for this match--in the past, this with any character has been prelude to a hard match with a hard-fought win in the end.
I definitely agree though--no one should be SHOWN to win against Atobe, at least (I don't want to see it :P).

Date: 2006-01-20 01:57 am (UTC)But we saw here that Shishido/Ohtori pair just didn't have the skills Golden Pair had, so what made them 'deserve' to win more?
There's a big wall that rival school fans have to face, and that's the fact that they are fans of the rival schools. We don't get much background information or snippets of scenes to appease us... persumably the readers want to see what the protagonists are up to, so rival time gets cut, unfortunatley ;_;
And here's the nut for Shishido: if he lost here, then the entire spiel about him losing his regulars position earlier in the series, cutting his hair to get it back(boo hoo), Atobe and Ohtori sticking up for him, etc, will all mean nothing. If he lost this match, then all his hard work and character building go down the drain. In that sense, he, less the pair perhaps, deserves a win. I just think that it would be pointless to sacrifice Shishido's entire character building that occured throughout the series should be nullified over a match against a pair who can get their time later. The Golden Pair, being from the protagonist school, will get more page/screen time later. They have a chance of actually winning later. Unfortunatley, the rival school doubles pair doesn't, because there will be no more time for them. ;_;
But. I totally agree with you on the Atobe part. I don't want to see him lose either. ;_; (Hope it didn't sound like I was picking a fight with you or anything... because I didn't mean it as such... I just wanted to step into the defense for the Silver Pair... >_> *runs back to her corner of the fandom*)

Date: 2006-01-20 02:03 am (UTC)I can very much see your point about Shishido now--many times that fact (that he's in a much more precarious position than Ohtori as a regular) gets glossed voer and forgotten.
And also agreed on rival school status--they're automatically the underdogs, I suppose, and Konomi is an underdog lover, if nothing else, I suppose. And yes, it's my hope that this loss will be made up for in the finals, or I'll be very. Very. Unhappy.
(and omg don't run! I love friendly debate! Almost everyone on my flist is a GP fangirl like me, so I rarely get to see other POVs! XD)

Date: 2006-01-24 11:37 pm (UTC)Fencer, the day that I bought my jump we took the D1 bus stop to Ginkakuji temple. Owned by the SP'ers or what??! XD
When you think about it though, nobody was really appeased... the SP victory was kind of hollow, like it's not really a victory you can rejoice in, kind of like when Inui stopped the match to have it reevaluated. And that was an SP victory too, so really they've been given buggery to celebrate, or rather, they can't really win on their own terms because people (Inui, Eiji) keep stealing it away from them... (they deserve a true win!)
But on our side too... spiritual
imperius cursebonding above the clouds is all very nice (be nice if Oishi waxed poetical about it too, but I have issues with Konomi!Oishi)but really... we haven't beaten anybody worthwhile in forever. Apparently we're just the 'pair' at the moment!! XD And we've been shown to work hard for it. And it's just such a shame that Konomi mucked around with this match instead of making it about raw talent rather than magical features.... simply because he had to gear it towards Atobe & Ryoma.
Lets hope that Ryoma gets caned... It's hideously unlikely, but then again, Konomi pulled Tez & Kabaji out of his arse, so who knows!!! :P

When Konomi had his accident or whatever, I know it was horrible, but I thought two things:
1) How's that karma taste, bitch?
2) Why couldn't this have happened, like, a few weeks ago, when GP and SP were still playing, dammit?!
I really--really--hope he's got something planned, something big, I mean. It just...it really felt WEIRD, you know? I mean, I was mad, but underneath I was just confused!
