Cooking in Japan
8 January 2008 10:06 amOkay, so I'm not usually one for making New Year's resolutions, because I generally lack the drive or desire to stick with them--for me to see something through to the end, I need to have an intense passion to do it.
So I'm not expecting this to last long, but it's worth a shot :P
I want to start cooking at home more. Right now, I generally eat out pretty much every day. This is neither healthy nor good for my wallet (but it does let me see my CocoIchi delivery guy almost every day :D), so it'd be a good idea for me to stop, if I could.
I can cook, yeah, but I don't really know HOW or WHAT. I can follow a recipe fine, but I don't know the first thing TO make unless I see it on a shelf. I'm good at things that come in boxes with recipes on them, which was fine in America, but is pretty hard for me to find here at the local Heiwado. Japanese like to COOK cook, as in buy meat and spices and cook them together and all. Which I suck at.
So here I turn to you guys--I think I want to buy a recipe book (so I can have a hard copy out there in front of me at the stove), but there are 23049823042 different kinds of those out there, so I wouldn't know where to start.
I don't want to make big meals--I just want something simple that I can cook in under an hour and still have a pretty good meal. I love chicken, but am kinda wary about what I'll find in a store. Pork is okay too, but beef is kind of expensive, and I don't like seafood (this being said, things that don't need meat would be good 8D). Veggie wise...umm, I like potatoes? I'm very very picky, sorry! Just--if you have some kind of recipe book (preferably available on Amazon :D) that has quick, simple meals that you think I could probably find the ingredients at the local grocer's, let me know. PLEASE.
Rice, any and all kinds of noodles (including Italian stuff), tomato sauces, flour, sugar, cereals, milk, juices, we've got those--it's just most anything "instant" outside of ramen and curry is hard to find, and I'm an impatient girl XD Give me your recommendations, people!
And of course, if you know of any good recipe sites, or have a fave recipe of your own, too, that's welcome ^_~
Also, I have a stove (not an oven), a fridge, a microwave, and a rice-cooker at my disposal. That is all. I also have a can opener, but there's just not that much Cambell's here, unfortunately ;_;
My luggage finally arrived yesterday. I'm warm!
