I'M A MACHINE.

"Do you ever think..." Tuti started one evening, out of the blue, "...that we aren't careful enough?"
"What do you mean?" Takashi responded to the idle suggestion, flipping through his script and continuing to highlight his lines without missing a beat.
"Just...what if something happened sometime. If someone found out."
"If someone found out about something some time..." Takashi repeated flatly, letting his script fall into his lap, and he laughed roughly. "Wanna be just a little more vague?"
"I mean--" Tuti sat up, pulling his legs up to sit cross-legged on Takashi's bed and leaned forward for added dramatic effect, "--we're not exactly safe, you know. Something could happen, and..."
"We aren't...talking about condoms, are we? 'Cause I'm getting confused here."
"No, geez--us. You know?" He waved his hands around the room, "This--being...together, or whatever."
Takashi's brows lifted in comprehension, lips forming a small "o". "I...guess I hadn't really thought about it, no."
"Maybe we should."
"Did something happen, Tuti?" he laughed nervously, setting aside the script altogether now and recapping the highlighter. It certainly wasn't unlike his boyfriend to be a bit, well, high-strung, but this was decidedly out of the blue, him bringing up this topic of conversation.
"No--no, I mean. Nothing out of the ordinary, just...I was thinking is all."
"Mmm, I thought we agreed that was a dangerous thing for you to do," Takashi smiled, twisting around in his back to settle his head in Tuti's lap.
"Oiii," came the expected response, and Tuti dragged a few fingers through the long locks that pooled in his lap, scratching Takashi's scalp until his eyes glazed over in pleasure. "I was just thinking what might happen--do you think people'd stop coming to our shows, or feel like we betrayed them or something?"
Takashi frowned in thought, "I guess some might..."
"And some would buy even more tickets, is that the other half of the sentence?"
"Bingo," he laughed, grin widening. "Seriously, though, I just...stopped worrying about it, I guess."
Tuti frowned, brows knitting, "How could you stop worrying about it? I don't think I could even if I wanted to..."
A shrug, not an easy feat with his head settled in the other man's lap. "Tamacchi's good at worrying and, besides, all the people whose opinion I care about know, so...nothing else really matters."
"Liar," Tuti smiled again, a little sadly this time, and started rubbing Takashi's temples, "You care what everyone would think. You always care about what people think about you."
He opened his eyes, staring straight into Tuti's face, then brought his hand up to settle over one of the ones framing his face. "I never let what people think stop me from doing something I really want to do, though, you know."
"...Yeah, I know."
"So don't you let it, either."
Tuti looked offended, and gasped, "What? Me? Conform to society's standards? Nagayama Takashi, you ought to know better by now."

Date: 2008-10-13 11:50 pm (UTC)Funny that it takes this conversation between them for that to click in Tuti's head. Ah, the demons of thinking too much...
And really, this is quantity and quality IMHO ;)
