So, I think...I wanna join a gym. Or work out somewhere at least. Maybe it would only be a couple of nights a week (because I NEED my time online alone _o_), but...I really think I need it. I used to get a decent workout in Shiga by having to bike everywhere, and while it's nice now to have the trains to take me where I want to go, especially in the summer heat, I know it's already starting to show in my "problem areas" :P

I've never had a gym membership before, and only really BEEN to a gym, period, once or twice in my life. I know I definitely don't want to go alone (at least not the first time), though I don't mind actually working out alone.

I don't have any particular thing I like to do at a gym -- I like variety: some treadmill, some biking, some weights (not really heavy lifting to buff up, just enough to tone), and if there were some courts or something someone wanted to play tennis or something on, I would not object ^_~

Are there any primarily-foreigner places you guys recommend? Preferably less than 10,000 a month if possible, and preferably on the Ikebukuro/Shinjuku/Shibuya side of the Yamanote. Are any of you guys going to gyms on a semi-regular basis and either wouldn't mind a workout buddy or at least can point me in the general direction of a nice place?

I belong to Renaissance Gym (http://www.s-renaissance.co.jp/), which is one of the big chains in Tokyo. It costs about 9,000 yen a month. Unfortunately, the one I go to (not that I've been in like a month) is closer to my work so it probably wouldn't be convenient for you. Still there are a lot of other branches and it is very nice. All the equipment is very new and it has classes, a swimming pool, etc.

One of my co-workers goes to a gym in Sunshine City that she really likes. I think it might be Tipness, but I'll check on the name.

i recommend tipness
there is one in shinjuku close to the east or west exit
its around 1man a month and really nice place too.
and you can go to lots of classes.
or go swimming, or just cardio.
There are many tipness's around tokyo. you can pay maybe 12000en so you can go to all the gyms. or its cheaper to just get one place.

Why a gym ? You can perfectly work out on your own (most of the time with even better results and obviously it's cheaper). Some workout programs are made just for that.

Because a) I live above people in an apartment that has pretty thin walls, so I couldn't do too much jumping around or cardio, and b) I lack the discipline to do much unless there are other people around me :P I've been through this before, trust me XD;;;;
