...How come there's no option now to view LJ in the old way?!

It still displays fine in IE7, but I tried Google Chrome and FF3 today and they all display in that horrible "updated" LJ style...and when I checked the viewing options, it wasn't even available o_O

When I look at the viewing options in IE7, NOTHING is checked...

WTF LJ??

WTF is the "old" way? I have IE7, FF3, and Chrome, but I don't know what particular difference you're seeing. Chrome won't let me scroll down for some reason, so I'm back on FF3 for now (seeing as I hate IE with a burning passion, and I only keep it around because some programs refuse to work with FF).

Alas, I hate FF3 with a burning passion XD Chrome isn't really a-freaking-mazing, and there are still bugs to be worked out, so I'll likely stick with IE7, especially since it sounds like 8's going to stick it on the same level as all the other browsers pretty much eliminating differences rendering-wise.

ANYWAYS--the "old" way is the original LJ bar, with the default icon on the right, a small username, and the search box defaults to Site & User (on the "new" version it defaults to interest, I believe, and the usericon is on the left, and the username is in huge letters >_>)

For some reason it won't display the old way at ALL (like, it's not an option even) in FF3 or Chrome, and while it displays fine in IE7, there is still no option to check it (so if I changed, I could never go back).

Oh, mine are the same on both IE7 and FF3. I remember what you're talking about though. I just thought that was an LJ update change. Hmmm...

IE doesn't like me, and by that, I mean it crashes on me all the time. so I prefer not to use it. I keep hearing things about IE8, but I'm not excited. This damn Vista OS will probably force me to upgrade to it (since it forced all of the other Microsoft updates on me) whenever it comes out, but I'm not seeing anything in IE8 that I don't already have in FF3 (except for the super-protected-spy mode where they don't track you or keep your cookies). Maybe it'll finally catch up to the other guys...

Duuuude what don't you like about Vista?? o_O It's a beautiful OS, has no faults that I can see, and hardly anyone has any trouble with it anymore (it fixed itself up faster than XP did when it came out and everyone pitched a fit XD). No crashes, smooth as vanilla, and so preeettttyyyy...*ahem*

IE8's supposed to have one mode to view pages like FF3 and such, getting rid of all the extra code lower versions have--but the problem is that many sites compensate for IE quirks already, so then THOSE sites will render incorrectly, so IE8 will actually also allow you to view in either IE8 mode OR IE7, easing the transition until no one has to mess with the older version hangups anymore~

Then it'll simply be a matter of security (the private mode will be a big thing, Chrome has it too--and I'll bet you FF will put it on their next release too) and customizability, I'll bet, which admittedly FF has a leg-up there, but I don't imagine a company like Microsoft will let their marketshare fall too low before they try and do something about it :/

I tell ya, Microsoft just doesn't like me. Vista may be pretty, but it runs like crap on my system. Periodic freezes, "Blah blah program has stopped running" error messages...hell, I can't even hibernate anymore since the computer finds an error and resets itself. I will admit that Vista fixes bugs a LOT faster than XP did, but there are many things I can't do anymore. I can't use the slideshow function, the computer temporarily freezes when it has to warn me about installing a new program...I'm running on 2GB of RAM with a 160GB harddrive, and I can't figure out where these problems come from. No viruses, not too many installed programs, not a lot of simultaneous functions...Bah, I really just want hibernate and slideshow back. I can deal with the other stuff.

I was actually impressed that Chrome brought over all my FF3 bookmarks and passwords pretty easily. The transfer wasn't even worth it on IE. Perhaps IE can do more than I give it credit for, but at this point, I'm too tired of it to give it another chance. I have noticed some subtle improvements on the few times I head over there to update my [livejournal.com profile] bri_j journal, but yeah, I'm pretty loyal. I do want FF3 to get this private mode though, as that looks EXCELLENT in every way. And IE doesn't have to worry, as they own nearly 75% of the browser market. It's a near monopoly! FF only has 18%, ya know.

Ugh o_O Did you install Vista? Or was it pre-installed? Maybe that has to do with it? I hear toooons of people complain about the upgrade to Vista from XP, and how they immediately went back to XP if they could, but I got my laptop after Vista's release, so it was preinstalled (otherwise I wouldn't have gotten it--just cause it would've been too expensive and not really worth much)...*shrug* That sucks though D:

Chrome brought all my IE stuff over as well, though it is definitely a beta. It seems to render things more like FF than like IE, so we'll see how it works out. I installed FF on my Mac I use at work, because Safari is boring XD And it works really nicely there, but I just don't like the way it runs on my Windows machine; IE gives me a much smoother run, but I guess I'm one in a million XD

Why do you update your Japan LJ in IE?

Date: 2008-09-03 01:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] reppu.livejournal.com
Mine was pre-installed on my new laptop. It worked fine in the beginning, but as I installed more programs and pushed it to work harder (aka transferred my workload from my previous laptop), it started having problems. I don't know how to diagnose them, and HP Customer Service's advice only temporarily fixes the problem, so I'm doing round-about solutions now. What can I say, it was a $500 laptop. Get what ya pay for, I guess.

I always update my Japan journal in IE because I like having saved passwords. I find it easier to use another browser and update rather than sign out in FF and then sign in under a new name. I don't use any fancy programs like Semagic to update; I go in and html code everything the old-fashioned way. Recently I've switched the Japan journal to Rich Text updating, but I don't really like that. I'm just a particular old fool, huh? :D

Btw, I've decided to come up next weekend, so if you have free time, let's hang out!

I dunno what I'd do without Semagic *_____* There isn't a version for Macs, so I can't use it at work, and man does it hurt XD I don't mind the HTML coding and all (though it IS easier to just type ctrl+i for italics and all :D), but the built-in image loader is a MUST HAVE for me since I make those picspam posts all the time~

Definitely let's hang out!! When will you be up? I'm going to see Cats on Sunday, but my Saturday is wiiiiiide open :D You staying at the Jennys'?

Yup, staying at the Jennies, and they have Saturday off too, so it'll probably be all of us, I'd suspect! :D

I've never worked with Semagic, so I don't know what wonderful things I'm missing. ^^

*randomly checks flist after a million years*

I don't even recall the 'old' way, tbh. I thought it was LJ updating their 'look'...? (I'm on FF, occasionally using IE for the few things FF doesn't like)
