Time for the update thingee!

Been back at school for a week, and classes this semester are pretty much the same as last semester. Though there is a cute guy in my Biomedical Genetics class...

Speaking of that class, AMY! And anyone else who wants a good read: You MUST go find "Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters" by Matt Ridley. It's our book for Genetics, but it's not a textbook, just a simple reading book. It's absolutely FASCINATING. What it basically does is address one pair of the 23 chromosomes in the human genome per chapter, along with the facets of human life that pair governs. There's a chapter on linguistics and language (discussin how humans seem to be hard-wired to instinctively learn some language), another on just what 'memory' is, another on creativity, and of course a chapter on sexuality (the discussion of the 'gay gene' was just...WOW). A VERY good read so far, and I highly recommend it to anyone with a little free time.

In other news, I did my first translation (a Kyou Kara Maou doujinshi; if you don't know what that is, then it doesn't concern you) for a scanlation group--go me! I used one of my gmail invites to open up an account strictly for me to upload stuff so friends can download things from it (so I'll give the name and password to anyone who wants it). Songs, text files, pretty much anything below 10mb (since that's the largest attachment I can handle) will go in here, and if someone wants it just drop me a reply or whatever. Got requests? I'll help if I can.

Also, came across a very very...well, strange, but quite fascinating essay from another LJ user, here. If you're a Christian, and if you read slash (again, if you don't know what that is, you probably don't need to concern yourself with it) it's well worth a read. Made me think long and hard... Agree? Disagree? I don't claim to be well-versed on such topics as this, but it does make you sit back and think.

When are people's Spring Breaks? Mine's the week before my bday (March 22), so that would make it...14-18? Something like that.

did you never get into this discussion (on homosexuality and christianity) with me and fran? we read a similar book to the one she describes: Is the Homosexual my Neighbor? by Letha Scanzoni. i didn't read all of the essay, but i agree with what i read. i'd like to itterate one point that scanzoni makes: the bible doesn't even mention homosexuality in the context of a monogamous relationship because such a concept was completely foreign and unheard of throughout the time the bible was written. how can the bible explicitly condemn same sex marriages for example when such an arrangement was unfathomable to biblical writers? but before i start to get bitter and cynical and make sarcastic references to fundamentalist christians coughcoughfalwellcoughcough and their (in my opinion) irrational and closed-minded views on homosexuality, let me just say that i dont find anything morally wrong w/ homosexuality and leave it at that.

I didn't hear that convo!! Argh, I would've liked to have heard y'all's views, cause up til now all I hear are the "No! BAD!" and "Meh, who cares." I found that essay, strangely enough, from the Daily Snitch, a compilation of random posts that have to do with the Harry Potter fandom. It was the first thing I'd read that actually made SENSE and backed their stuff up.

I think I'll check out those books now--the girl who wrote the essay alluded to that book as well. And I agree with you, the Bible DOESN'T mention same-sex marriages, only the things that existed back then (i.e. adulterey, prostitution, etc).

And on that Harry Potter note...I READ DV 15 pt 2!!! OMGOMGOMG!! HOW COULD SHE MAKE US WAIT WITH THAT CLIFFHANGER?!
