English spelling is the way it is because THAT'S HOW IT IS. Illiteracy is not spelling's fault. Illiteracy is the educational system's fault. Japan has it just as bad off as we do if not worse with their 2934872394823423 complicated kanji, and they seem to be doing just
fine.

Children will suck it up and learn the spelling the same way they've done for years. The end.

Oooh, damn, you saw that article too? I wanted to stab those idiots. Funny, when I read it, I thought of China and Japanese and such and I was like, "Yeah, see, they can learn their billion kanji and multiple meanings and different combos meaning different things just fine"

And seriously, they want us to spell things like they sound? Sorry but I actually like words to look nice. Part of what I like so much about English is that, to me at least, it's pretty. Not pretty in the same way Japanese is pretty but it still can look very nice.

If people want to complain about spelling and how children are learning, maybe they should actually look at the education system rather than going, ";_; Our language is, like, hard and junk"

Mrrr, yes -_- I know some stuff from English is spelled weird, but it's the same way with ANY language! It's just more obvious in English because we have SO MANY WORDS. You have silent vowels and consonants in pretty much every language, and yet no other country is whining about their illiteracy rates being tied into their zomg hard spelling system.

I know. I mean, yeah, English is a bastard language that raped other languages but most languages are like that. And it's not like we have a low literacy rate or something. Last I knew it was 97% or something? Seriously, if anything it's because of the education system, which has been getting worse and less money has been going to it and all the emphasis on things like science and math have cut a lot of the reading and arts programs.

OMG I KNOW. D: The whole comm of grammar_whores is freaking out about all this recent buzz. I've seen probably about ten articles on it thus far, and, truth be told, I'm freaking out too O_O; I don't want to have the children of our future writing like that AT ALL. I totally agree with your post and everyone's comments. I know math and science are important but that totally doesn't mean we have to go and crapify English to make it more "efficient". (Like it's that hard to memorize c = k sound. I swear Conan O Brien did a skit on this topic before.)
