So, in an effort to mainstream myself more, I've been downloading "popular" shows in an effort to see if I really have just been missing something because everyone else seems to be really into certain shows that I don't see the attraction in.
Turns out nope, I'm not missing anything :P For whatever reason these shows seem to be popular, it definitely doesn't do anything for me, and I'd really like some insight from those of you who DO watch the shows as to wtf is so great about them :D Spoilers, of course, for what I've seen (and no, I don't mind spoilers for stuff I haven't seen, btw)
Torchwood: now, I've never seen Dr. Who. I've never wanted to, never intend to, and generally just am not into that scene. Of course, I don't like a lot of British shows that I've seen (...except Mr. Bean. I love Rowan Atkinson, strange), so that isn't so much a surprise, but the premise seemed interesting: aliens/scifi, weird shit going down, attractive cast, and if fandomsecrets is telling the truth (and it always is, duh) the main hot guy is totally gay for another hot guy.
With that in mind, I downloaded the first season and sat back.
Problem #1) WHERE IS ALL THIS EXPECTED GAY? No, I don't mean the gay in almost every episode -- I mean the gay I WANTED to see! There isn't even the SLIGHTEST bit of subtext until we're suddenly using strange code-speak in which STOPWATCHES play a role (wtf) and then random final episode weirdness. What. And also, WHAT THE HELL why is EVERYONE bisexual? I mean yeah, there's a scale people slid towards one end or the other, and it's probably safe to say everyone's had some kind of queer fantasy at some point but WHAT THE HELL. Every single person kisses at LEAST one other person of the same sex over a VERY FEW NUMBER OF EPISODES. That's almost as bad as making everyone just gay or just straight. I dunno why, it's just...it definitely doesn't come off as believable.
Problem #2) Captain Jack Harkness and Captain Jack Harkness and the Dance Plus a Kiss That Never Would Have Happened. Seriously. Everyone on the dance floor stopping to stare in awe and wonder (happy wonder!) at the two hot men tapping about in the middle of the floor and then sharing a passionate kiss? Was a little hard to believe in Queer as Folk in the 2000s, and sure as HELL wouldn't happen in the 1940s. I can suspend my disbelief for aliens, but it stops at people accepting homosexuals (lololololol).
Problem #3) Have I mentioned the lack of expected gay? Ianto hated Jack's guts after Lisa died, and then a few episodes later suddenly they're fucking? And tossing about giggly innuendo? wtf? I can understand leaving a little bit up to the imagination but that's like MAKING THE AUDIENCE FEEL LIKE THEY MISSED AN EPISODE OR 5.
Problem #4) How there is 0 consistency in the show, wtf. I mean, everyone's sleeping with someone new one episode later, it's like the writers couldn't decide who they wanted to pair people up with. First Jack's feeling up Gwen on the shooting range, then he's trading stopwatch-related pillowtalk over a corpse with Ianto. Toshiko's wangsting about Owen, then finding her inner lesbian, then totally over Owen, then having some weird thing with Jack. And Gwen, ooooh Gwen. Let's not go there, suffice to say wtf poor Reese?
Problem #5) Suzie was a bitch. I miss her <3 I'm surprised the writers' attention spans lasted long enough to remember she'd ever even been a character.
In short, WTF TORCHWOOD. WTF. You could've been cool, instead you were fail.
House: this one didn't even get the full season, as I wasn't really that interested in it in the first place. I watched the first episode, and all I have to say is -- wow, much dislike for Cuddy. People actually ship her with House? I'm well aware of the popular ships, and definitely have to say I saw way more potential with Wilson than her, and you'd think for a Fox show they'd be a little more eager to ship the main male and female characters :P
Seriously, though, she really rubbed me the wrong way -- I mean, I know House is supposed to be this surly curmudgeon who lacks social skills but is damn good at his job. You're not supposed to love him, you're supposed to respect him. I dunno what you're supposed to do with Cuddy -- she comes off as something of a bitch, and not the good, get-the-job-done kind :/ Then again, all I saw was one 40-minute show, possibly I missed a big part of her. Definitely not inclined to watch more though >_<
JR: I love. Love. Love the Romantica couple. They have got to be the most interesting, sweet, loving yaoi couple I've seen since I can remember. With that said, I really really can't stand the Egoists or Terrorists. Yet that's ALL fandom seems to like. Egoists bore me, as Hiroki's the exact kind of yaoi guy I can't stand--the grumpy, reluctant uke. Grumpy ukes are nice (Wolfram!), reluctant ukes are nice (Misaki :P). Both together? :////// Terrorist could be worse, but there really hasn't been much with them so far, and they're just kind of annoying me right now in that they're getting in the way of good Romantica episodes.
That said, S2 9 and 10, Romantica saikooooo *\o/*

PS: No, I don't want any recommendations :P If I have to be pushed into a fandom, I'm going to be disinclined to enjoy it from the start.
